Self-employed? Five insurance questions worth asking

When you work for yourself, your personal income may depend on staying well enough to work and on the continued success of your business. You may not have employer-funded sick leave, and sales revenue is not always the same as income you can insure.

How is your income calculated?

Insurers may require financial statements or other evidence of eligible earnings. Income and payment definitions differ across policies, so ask how your situation would be assessed.

How long can you cover essential expenses?

Map household commitments and any ongoing business costs. Savings help determine the waiting period you might be able to manage before any insurance benefit begins.

How does ACC fit?

ACC provides support for eligible accident-related injuries, but ordinary illness is generally outside its cover. A private policy may also offset some ACC payments. Check ACC’s official guidance and policy terms.

What counts as unable to work?

Occupation definitions, partial disability provisions, exclusions and benefit periods can influence how a policy would respond when you can perform some but not all duties.

What belongs with a referral specialist?

Personal income protection and business property, liability or interruption cover are different topics. Nestwell can arrange a specialist referral for business-level insurance, while discussing personal protection within the approved insurance advice scope.

Take these questions to your adviser

  • What records would support my application?
  • How is income assessed after a claim?
  • What savings buffer do I have?
  • Are business and personal risks being confused?

General information. Insurance and tax outcomes depend on individual circumstances and policy terms.

Questions to take away

Which facts about my own situation matter most? What exclusions or eligibility rules still need checking? Who will give any personalised advice, and how can I review their disclosures?

This is general educational information. Confirm current rules and your circumstances with an appropriately authorised adviser.
