If you are new to New Zealand or have never had personal insurance, it can be difficult to know what is covered automatically and what requires a private policy. Start by understanding what each system is designed to do.
ACC supports qualifying injuries
New Zealand’s accident compensation scheme may provide assistance with covered personal injuries, including treatment and, for eligible earners, income-related support. It generally does not cover ordinary illness. Refer to ACC’s current rules for details.
Public healthcare and health insurance are different
Public healthcare provides a range of services subject to eligibility and service requirements. Private health insurance may help meet certain eligible private treatment costs within policy limits; it does not guarantee every consultation or procedure.
Life, trauma and income policies have distinct purposes
Life cover may provide financial support after an insured death. Trauma insurance may pay a lump sum after a defined serious medical event. Income protection may provide payments when illness or injury meets the policy’s inability-to-work conditions.
Understand what a policy does not cover
Ask about exclusions, pre-existing conditions, benefit limits, medical disclosure, waiting periods and premium changes. A short explanation is not a replacement for reading the policy wording.
Know who is providing the advice
Nestwell’s personal insurance advice operates under IFO Peace of Mind Advice Limited. KiwiSaver, investment, home and business insurance enquiries can involve introductions to separate specialist referral partners. Each adviser should explain their scope and disclosures.
Your starter checklist
- Which financial risk concerns me most?
- What does ACC or public healthcare usually address?
- Who would pay household costs after illness or injury?
- Which adviser is responsible for this product recommendation?

Questions to take away
Which facts about my own situation matter most? What exclusions or eligibility rules still need checking? Who will give any personalised advice, and how can I review their disclosures?
This is general educational information. Confirm current rules and your circumstances with an appropriately authorised adviser.
