Mortgage protection

Mortgage protection insurance is often designed to help cover regular mortgage repayments when you cannot work due to eligible illness or injury. This is usually different from life cover that could provide a lump sum to reduce a loan.

Questions you may have

Does mortgage protection repay my mortgage or cover repayments?

Many mortgage-repayment products provide an ongoing benefit for eligible inability to work, rather than automatically clearing the mortgage balance. A lump sum may instead come from another type of cover, such as life or TPD insurance.

How is mortgage protection different from income protection?

Mortgage protection often focuses on a defined repayment-related benefit. Income protection is usually linked to a portion of earned income. Definitions, claim triggers and payment limits differ across insurers.

Can I still receive a benefit if I cannot work because of illness?

Many products are designed to respond to qualifying illness as well as injury. The policy definition, waiting period, employment status and exclusions determine whether a particular claim qualifies.

How should I choose a waiting period?

Think about available sick leave, savings and how long the household can cover repayments without earnings. A longer waiting period may lower premiums but increases the period you must fund yourself.
